A few weeks ago, Dwayne Johnson revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic could potentially derail Warner Bros. and New Line’s plans to start shooting Black Adam this summer. Now, it looks like this worst case scenario has officially become a reality. During a new Instagram Live session, Johnson confirmed that the film’s production is getting pushed back.
“We still plan on shooting probably at the end of summer now, probably pushed into the end of August or September,” said Johnson via CBR. “That is a project I hold near and dear to my heart and so I can’t wait to get started.”

Black Adam was originally targeting a July start date, so the new August/September timeframe isn’t too big of a shift. Of course, that depends on whether the ongoing health crisis blows over by then. It’s also not clear if this delay will impact the movie’s December 2021 release date. If that happens, it will likely postpone the inevitable onscreen meetup between Johnson’s character and Zachary Levi’s Shazam, whose own sequel was also supposed to begin shooting this year. Unfortunately, Shazam! 2 director David F. Sandberg recently confessed that that film might not start on schedule either.
Jaume Collet-Serra signed on to direct Black Adam last summer. Since then, there haven’t been any other casting announcements for the film. However, Johnson revealed that members of the Justice Society of America will appear as well.
