Warner Bros. Slashes Birds of Prey’s VOD Price

Even with an early home media release, Birds of Prey has been struggling to find its footing. The latest DC movie was already suffering from meager box office numbers before COVID-19 forced moviegoers to take shelter inside their homes. Warner Bros. likely hoped that audiences would devote some of their non-negotiable downtime to stream the film digitally. Now, the studio is trying a different tactic. IndieWire reports that Warner Bros. has made Birds of Prey available to rent via VOD for a measly $5.99.

WB initially released the movie on digital last month for $19.99. However, the cheaper rental price is striking a chord with consumers. The film is currently sitting at the #1 spot on iTunes, but it’s anyone’s guess as to how long it can maintain this position. Rounding out the top five are Knives Out, Dolittle, Little Women, and Jumanji: The Next Level.

Normally, movies don’t hit VOD until somewhere between 75 and 90 days after their theatrical premiere. But these aren’t normal circumstances. A handful of other recent films have gotten early digital releases in response to movie theaters shutting down. Sonic the Hedgehog, Bad Boys for Life, and Bloodshot are among those that can be purchased for $19.99. Additionally, Pixar’s latest film, Onward, had an early release on Disney+.

For fans who prefer physical media, Birds of Prey will also be available to own on Blu-ray and DVD on May 12.
