In the opening minutes of Guardians of the Galaxy, Peter Quill was kidnapped from Earth by Yondu’s Ravagers and began his destiny as Star-Lord. However, Quill finally made his return to Earth in Avengers: Endgame. Following the recent Guardians of the Galaxy online watch party, a fan asked director James Gunn why Star-Lord didn’t stay on his homeworld for any meaningful length of time. And according to Gunn, it all goes back to the death of Star-Lord’s mother, Meredith Quill.
Peter despised being back on earth and got off that planet as fast as he freaking could. He associates it completely with his mother dying. #QuarantineWatchParty #GotG https://t.co/oz2vj6UBan

Despite the fan’s inference that Grandpa Quill is dead, Gunn has previously indicated that he is still alive. Gregg Hill portrayed Quill’s grandfather in the first Guardians movie as well as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Although Gunn kept the first two films in the series far from Earth, it seems likely that Quill and his grandfather will eventually meet again. If there were no plans to make that happen, then Grandpa Quill probably wouldn’t have had a cameo appearance in the first sequel. He’s also Peter Quill’s last living relative, as far as we know. That certainly seems like it’s worth exploring when Gunn is able to begin working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
