Report: Ronny Chieng Cast in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Production on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is currently in limbo as the world waits for the COVID-19 pandemic to end. However, that doesn’t mean casting announcements can’t still happen. Apparently, Marvel has recruited a rising star in the comedy world to add extra levity to the film’s story. DiscussingFilm is reporting that Ronny Chieng has joined the movie’s cast.

Since 2015, Chieng has been a correspondent on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. He also had a supporting role in Crazy Rich Asians and headlined his own miniseries, Ronny Chieng: International Student, which debuted in 2017. More recently, Chieng released his first stand-up special for Netflix, Asian Comedian Destroys America!, at the end of 2019.

According to DF’s sources, Chieng signed on to appear in Shang-Chi before filming was halted. The report doesn’t offer any clue as to who Chieng will play in the movie or whether he’s filmed any scenes yet. Simu Liu is headlining the film as Shang-Chi, alongside Awkwafina (another Crazy Rich Asians alum), and Tony Leung as the Mandarin. Destin Daniel Cretton is directing the film from a script penned by David Callaham.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will hit theaters on May 7, 2021.
