Dwayne Johnson Says Coronavirus Could Delay Black Adam’s Production

After years of waiting, it was starting to look like production on Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam movie was getting underway. Warner Bros. hired Jaume Collet-Serra to direct the film last summer and planned to have cameras rolling by July. But this was before COVID-19 reared its ugly head and cast doubt on the entertainment industry’s immediate future. Now, Johnson is suggesting that the ongoing global health crisis could delay the project even further.

Via Joblo, Johnson recently jumped on the Instagram-Live-during-self-quarantine bandwagon to host a Q&A with fans. The conversation eventually steered toward Black Adam. While nothing’s set in stone just yet, Johnson suggested that everyone involved is preparing for the worst.

“I’m very excited about Black Adam by the way, I’ve been training very, very hard for that role,” said Johnson. “We were supposed to start shooting it in the summer, in July, and we’ll see. I’m not quite too sure if it’s still gonna happen, or, at least, if we’ll still start shooting in July but it will all work out the way it’s meant to work out.”

Johnson has spent the last few months teasing his Black Adam workouts on Instagram. And since Johnson seems to have a gym in his house, the pandemic probably won’t slow him down. Black Adam’s intended start date is still three months away. But it’s still not clear when the crisis will wind down. Warner Bros. recently halted filming on its two biggest 2021 tentpoles, The Batman and The Matrix 4. However, Warner Bros. still hasn’t shifted the theatrical release of Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, which bows on July 17.

Black Adam is still targeting a December 22, 2021 release date.
