Vin Diesel’s Bloodshot Movie Gets An Early Digital Release

Originally, Bloodshot was meant to launch a shared universe of Valiant Comics inspired films. However, it severely underperformed at the box office thanks to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Technically, it’s still out in the few theaters that remain open. But now, barely a week after its release, Bloodshot has a digital release date.

Via Deadline, Sony Pictures has moved Bloodshot‘s digital debut to Tuesday, March 24. In a statement, Sony also sought to reassure theater owners that it remains committed to maintaining the theatrical window.

“Sony Pictures is firmly committed to theatrical exhibition and we support windowing,” said Sony Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman. “This is a unique and exceedingly rare circumstance where theaters have been required to close nationwide for the greater good and Bloodshot is abruptly unavailable in any medium. Audiences will now have the chance to own Bloodshot right away and see it at home, where we are all spending more time. We are confident that — like other businesses hit hard by the virus — movie theaters will bounce back strongly, and we will be there to support them.”

Vin Diesel stars in the movie as Rex Garrison/Bloodshot. Eiza González also co-stars in the film as Katie/KT, with Sam Heughan as Jimmy Dalton, Toby Kebbell as Martin Axe, and Guy Pearce as Dr. Emil Harting. Additionally, Lamorne Morris, Talulah Riley, Alex Hernandez, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, and Tamer Burjaq appear in co-starring roles.

Given the tepid box office response to Bloodshot, it’s unlikely that any sequel will be immediately forthcoming. It’s also unclear how much of the film’s tepid box office was simply due to bad timing with the coronavirus crisis. However, if the film does very well in digital then it could get a shot at cinematic redemption. With the delay of Fast 9, it’s also the only marquee film starring Diesel on the horizon.
