Although it’s getting released under the rebranded 20th Century Studios banner, The New Mutants serves as Fox’s final X-Men movie. But if director Josh Boone had his way, there would be two more movies on the horizon. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Boone shared his plans for a pair of New Mutants sequels that were derailed by the Disney-Fox merger.
Boone and his co-writer, Knate Lee, apparently pitched The New Mutants to Fox as a three-film concept. They outlined the stories in PDF comics, each one taking on the feel of a different type of horror movie. More interestingly, Boone intended for the original film to set up the first sequel with a post-credits scene. This scene would have introduced Roberto da Costa/Sunspot’s father, Emmanuel da Costa, played by none other than Antonio Banderas.
“It was intentional that we didn’t shoot it,” said Boone. “We had always planned to have a tag at the end of the movie that introduced the villain for the next movie. We even had an actor cast, but because of the merger and because Marvel owns X-Men now and is going to do their own thing, there was no reason to go shoot it.”

In Marvel’s comic universe, Emmanual da Costa is linked to the infamous Hellfire Club. Boone’s sequel would have reportedly seen Henry Zaga’s Roberto and his fellow New Mutants traveling with his father to Brazil, where Roberto reunites with his long-lost mother. But unbeknownst to Roberto, Emmanuel aims to kill his wife in order to safeguard his own business interests. Amid this familial conflict, Boone would have introduced even more mutant characters as well, including Karma and Warlock.
Disney officially absorbed Fox’s Marvel assets last year. With this, it’s only a matter of time before Marvel Studios brings their own version of mutants into the MCU. Regardless, Boone isn’t giving up on his ideas just yet.
“In our heart of hearts, we hope [The New Mutants] makes a bunch of money so that we can go make the second one,” admitted Boone. “We’re all just bummed at everything that happened. Just the merger and everything else. It had nothing to do with us personally and had an impact on every single movie at Fox at the time.”
