Dave Bautista Says James Gunn Wanted to Make a Drax and Mantis Spinoff

Everybody loves Rocket and Groot, but after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Drax and Mantis became a standout comedic pairing. Although the movie wasn’t lacking in humor, the interplay between Drax’s blunt literalism and Mantis’ childlike innocence resulted in some extra laughs. Apparently, this didn’t go unnoticed by director James Gunn. That’s probably why he came up with an idea for a spinoff headlined by Dave Bautista and Pom Klementieff’s heroes.

Bautista recently participated in an interview with Collider held at the Funko store in Hollywood. At one point, Bautista was asked if he would be open to starring in a Drax series on Disney+. Bautista admitted that the intensive makeup process he goes through would make this unlikely. Regardless, he did use the opportunity to reveal Gunn’s concept for a Drax and Mantis film.

“James Gunn had the idea to do a Drax-Mantis movie,” said Bautista. “That’s what I’d be up for because there’s just too much fun there. Well, he wanted to do it, he had an idea for it. It’s just Marvel has their slot for the next fix years and they know how their story is going to go. It’s hard for them to have an idea for a film and say ‘yeah we want to fit that into here’. It just didn’t fit into their schedule.”

Bautista hasn’t been shy about expressing his desire for Drax to get his own movie in the past. However, Drax sharing the screen with Klementieff’s Mantis in a cosmic buddy comedy might have a better chance of happening. Phase Four might be completely mapped out, but there’s always Phase Five…
