Ben Affleck Reflects on His Exit From The Batman

After years of development, The Batman is currently filming with Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight/Bruce Wayne. Ben Affleck was originally going to star in and direct The Batman from a script he co-wrote. However, Affleck later decided to step down as director; which led Matt Reeves to sign on as the new helmer. Eventually, Affleck relinquished his role as well. Now, Affleck is shedding some additional light on his departure in a new interview with The New York Times.

“I showed somebody The Batman script,” recalled Affleck. “They said, ‘I think the script is good. I also think you’ll drink yourself to death if you go through what you just went though again.'”

During the interview, Affleck also addressed his struggles with alcohol and his stints in rehab. Both topics are timely for his upcoming movie, The Way Back.

Affleck’s unguarded response to the negative criticism of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice led to the infamous “Sad Affleck” meme.  When Justice League was also poorly received, Affleck openly distanced himself from the DC Extended Universe. He finally stepped away from The Batman in 2019.
