Birds of Prey’s Preview Numbers May Lead To $40 Million Opening Weekend

Although it won’t have the biggest opening in the DC Cinematic Universe, Birds of Prey is off to a respectable start. With its late night screenings from Thursday night, the film earned $4 million. That primes it for a first place victory over the weekend, with a tally of around $40 to $45 million.

However, that number comes up short when compared to Warner Bros.’ recent DC films. For example, Joker made $13.3 million in its Thursday night debut, leading to an overall domestic take of $335 million. Additionally Aquaman scored a $9 million preview when it opened back in December 2018; and Shazam! scored $5.9 million last year.

That’s not to say Birds of Prey is doomed to failure. The movie has strong word of mouth and recently received a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, sitting at 83 percent. That could potentially allow Birds of Prey to beat box office estimates on the weekend.

It’s too soon to tell whether Birds of Prey will come anywhere close to Suicide Squad’s box office; which made $325 million domestically in 2016. Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is the primary link between the two films, and she’s set to return in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad in August 2021.
