Universal and Blumhouse Plan a Remake For The Thing

Nearly a decade ago, Universal Pictures revisited the world of John Carpenter’s The Thing with a modern prequel film. Now, Universal and Blumhouse are reportedly planning a new remake for The Thing based upon the original novella that inspired the film.

Via Collider, the new remake for The Thing is using Frozen Hell as the basis for its adaptation. Author John W. Campbell Jr. wrote Frozen Hell as the full-length version of his novella, Who Goes There?. That novella inspired both Carpenter’s film and the 1951 classic, The Thing From Another World. However, Frozen Hell was only discovered two years ago; which means that this will be the first time it has been adapted from the expanded tale.

Collider also notes that Alan Donnes will executive produce the new remake, and he reportedly wrote the following on Facebook.

“It’s OFFICIAL! I received my signed contract and first check! I am Executive Producing a remake of THE THING but with additional chapters of John Campbell’s groundbreaking novel, Frozen Hell, that had been lost for decades. Now, for the first time ever, Campbell’s full vision will be realized on the big screen. The new film will include the very best of RKO’s THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, John Carpenter’s classic THE THING and both books, Frozen Hell and Who Goes There?
