Last year, Taika Waititi entered the Star Wars universe when he provided the voice of IG-11 on The Mandalorian and directed the first season’s final episode. And while he’s teased his return in season 2, it looks like Lucasfilm has bigger plans for the filmmaker. Via The Hollywood Reporter, the studio is apparently courting Waititi to helm his own Star Wars movie.
THR is careful to point out that Waititi hasn’t agreed to anything just yet. Regardless, the director has definitely shown an interest in continuing his relationship with Lucasfim. Waititi spoke with Variety earlier this week after his latest film, Jojo Rabbit, received six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. When asked if his tenure on The Mandalorian could lead to him directing a full-fledged Star Wars movie, he expressed uncertainty at first. But almost immediately afterwards, he admitted that he’d jump at the chance.

“Oh, I don’t know anything about that, but Mandalorian was my chance to work with some stormtroopers,” said Waititi. “Yes. Obviously I would, but I’m going to just settle for IG-11 being the hero of the entire season.”
Waititi earned praise for his voiceover work as IG-11 on The Mandalorian. However, his directorial work on the season finale was arguably even more impressive. That episode was easily the most action-packed chapter of the show yet. So it’s no surprise that Lucasfilm would want Waititi to try to recreate that success on the big screen.
At this point, it’s hard to predict when Waititi would have time to make a Star Wars film. He’s currently working on his next project, Next Goal Wins, and will then segue into Thor: Love and Thunder, which is expected to start shooting this summer.
