In a few months, several DC heroines will join forces when Warner Bros. releases Birds of Prey in February. The movie also features the live-action debut of Cassandra Cain, who famously went on to become Batgirl in the comics. However, it sounds like fans will have to wait a while before she adopts this mantle on the big screen. Producers Sue Kroll and Bryan Unkeless have insisted that Cassandra’s masked alter-ego won’t appear in the upcoming team-up film.
Kroll and Unkeless spoke to Collider during a visit to Birds of Prey’s set earlier this year. When asked if moviegoers would see Cassandra don her own cape and cowl in the movie, Kroll gave a blunt response.
“You’ll not see Batgirl,” said Kroll. “Just gonna say ‘No.’ This is a studio question. That character’s in development on her own film, right?”

Warner Bros. has been developing a Batgirl movie since 2017. Joss Whedon was originally going to write and direct the film, but he ended up dropping out a year later. The studio subsequently hired Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson to take her own pass at the script. Whedon’s Batgirl draft reportedly centered on the Barbara Gordon version of the character. But now, assuming Hodson’s screenplay follows Birds of Prey’s continuity, it seems possible that Ella Jay Basco’s Cassandra Cain could be the new headliner.
Unkeless also touched on how Hodson collaborated with Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie during Birds of Prey’s development.
“A lot of it also has just originated from Margot and Christina kind of having this fun, open canvas or being attracted to the characters,” Unkeless explained. “So there certainly are some of those studio primers, but this, by and large, is, ‘This character’s awesome!’ You know? And Christina and Margot would get excited about these characters and it led us to the people we have on this wall.”
Birds of Prey hits theaters on February 6, 2020.
