Ava DuVernay Offers a Brief Update For the New Gods Movie

Back in 2018, director Ava DuVernay signed on to direct the live-action debut of New Gods for Warner Bros. Pictures. However, there’s still no sign of the film on Warner Bros.’ release schedule. DuVernay previously enlisted Batman comic scribe, Tom King, to co-write the New Gods script. And according to DuVernay, her collaboration with King is still very much a work in progress.

DuVernay has frequently remarked that Big Barda [top left] is among her personal favorite characters in New Gods. Within the comics, Barada is a former member of Darkseid’s Female Furies who abandoned duty. Instead, Barada fell in love with Scott Free/Mister Miracle [top right], and they fled Apokolips for a new life on Earth.

Jack Kirby created the New Gods in 1971 shortly after leaving Marvel for DC. Across several comics, Kirby unveiled his Fourth World heroes and villains. The heroic New Gods lived on New Genesis under the guidance of Highfather. However, their evil counterparts lived on Apokolips under Darkseid’s rule. To keep a fragile peace between them, Highfather and Darkseid exchanged their respective sons, Scott Free and Orion. But when Mister Miracle escaped with Barda, it set off a new war between the New Gods.

DuVernay has previously confirmed that Barda, Darkseid, and the Furies will be in her film. King also has a history with the New Gods, after collaborating with artist Mitch Gerads on Mister Miracle. But until casting begins, it’s unclear how many of the other characters will make the cut.
