Leia Accepts Her Legacy In Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker TV Trailer

The Skywalker Saga has run through the eight core films of the Star Wars franchise. However, it will all come to a conclusion in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Along the way, it looks like Leia may finally get something that she’s deserved for a long time.

In the newest TV spot for The Rise of Skywalker, Leia receives the lightsaber that once belonged to her father, Anakin Skywalker. Luke Skywalker also owned that lightsaber in the original trilogy, at least until The Empire Strikes Back. That lightsaber resurfaced in The Force Awakens, where it was claimed by Rey and seemingly destroyed in The Last Jedi.

Because Carrie Fisher passed away so suddenly in 2016, her appearance in The Rise of Skywalker is comprised of deleted scenes from the two previous films. This scene in particular may have been originally filmed for The Force Awakens. Trailers for that film showed Maz Kanata handing the lightsaber to Leia. However, the context will undoubtedly be different in this movie.

Because Disney and Lucasfilm dumped the Expanded Universe, Leia’s history as a Jedi was retconned away. Her first on-screen depiction of next-level Force powers occurred in The Last Jedi. But that was also a controversial moment for some fans, as she survived the vacuum of space. Yet without that moment, Leia wouldn’t have survived to bring the story to a close.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will hit theaters on Friday, December 20.
