Danny Elfman Rules Out the Possibility of a Justice League Snyder Cut

The fabled “Snyder Cut” of Justice League has been a white whale in the comic book world ever since the movie opened in 2017. But in the last few months, the #RelaseTheSnyderCut hashtag has gained newfound traction on social media. Even a few cast members have called on DC and Warner Bros. to share Zack Snyder’s original vision for the film with fans. Now, composer Danny Elfman is chiming in with his opinion, but his outlook on the matter isn’t so good.

While speaking with The Big Reviewski podcast (via ComicBook.com), Elfman was asked for his thoughts on whether the Snyder Cut will ever see the light of day. Unfortunately, he doesn’t think it’s in the cards, and his reason is actually pretty simple.

“Well, the thing is, he never finished it,” said Elfman. “So, I don’t know quite how they’d do [a Snyder cut]. He had a tremendous tragedy, which forced him to not finish the film. I don’t quite understand this, because it wasn’t like he was fired, and that there is a Director’s Cut that is a finished movie and that the studio fired him and then hired Joss.”

Snyder famously left Justice League midway through production after the death of his daughter. Joss Whedon ultimately stepped in to finish the film. According to a recent article in The New York Times, Whedon presided over reshoots that “included almost 80 new script pages.”

Elfman’s assertion that Snyder’s cut can’t exist because he never got a chance to complete the movie definitely makes sense. However, his remarks contradict recent statements made by actors involved with the film. Aquaman star Jason Momoa, claims to have seen Snyder’s version of the movie firsthand. Earlier this month, his Justice League co-stars Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot also jumped on the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut bandwagon on Twitter. Even Snyder himself added fuel to the fire by posting the hashtag as well. Regardless, one “knowledgeable insider” told Variety that fans really shouldn’t get their hopes up.

“That’s a pipe dream,” the insider said. “There’s no way it’s ever happening.”
