Sony Eyes Naomie Harris to Play Shriek in Venom 2

Earlier this week, word broke that Woody Harrelson’s Cletus Kasady/Carnage won’t be the only villain menacing Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock in Venom 2. It was reported that writer Kelly Marcel added occasional Spider-Man enemy Shriek to her screenplay for the film. Now, Sony appears to have found the right actress to bring her to life. Variety brings word that the studio wants Naomie Harris to fill the role in the upcoming sequel.

Harris is perhaps best known for starring as Eve Moneypenny in the James Bond franchise. She began playing this character in Skyfall in 2012 and will reprise the role in next year’s No Time to Die. More recently, she starred in Best Picture-winner Moonlight in 2016 and will next show up in Black and Blue later this month. Harris has also worked with Venom 2 director Andy Serkis once before. She voiced Nisha in Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, which hit Netflix last year.

Shriek’s powers allow her to fly and emit powerful sonic blasts from her hands. Needless to say, these can come in handy when fending off symbiotes like Venom. Additionally, the character is known for her romantic involvement with Kasady. Because of this, her appearance in Venom 2 has fans speculating that the movie draws influence from Maximum Carnage. Shriek also happens to be a mutant. But since Disney now has ownership of that word’s onscreen usage, the filmmakers will probably make tweaks to her origin. However, given Sony’s ability to cut deals with Marvel Studios over Spider-Man’s big-screen appearances, anything is possible.

Venom 2 will arrive in theaters on October 2, 2020.
