Warner Bros. has just secured a high-profile addition to the cast of The Matrix 4. According to Variety, Neil Patrick Harris has been recruited to appear in the upcoming sequel. Unfortunately, the nature of his role is unknown.
Although he’s been acting since he was a teenager, Harris gained a new following when he starred as Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother from 2005 to 2014. That role netted him four Emmy nominations and four Golden Globe nominations. Starting in 2017, he began playing Count Olaf on Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, based on Lemony Snicket’s series of young-adult novels.
Most of Harris’ work has been on TV, but he’s found the time to appear in films as well. His recent big-screen roles include Gone Girl and Downsizing. The Matrix 4 will mark his first big sci-fi project since he co-starred in Starship Troopers in 1997.

Harris will appear alongside returning Matrix stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss in the new film. So far, the only other bit of new casting is Aquaman’s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who joined the project earlier this month. His role is a mystery as well. Warner Bros. is co-producing and distributing the movie with Village Roadshow Pictures. Lana Wachowski, who co-directed the original Matrix trilogy with her sister, Lilly, is helming the next installment on her own. She’s co-writing the film with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell.
The Matrix 4 is still without a release date. Production on the sequel will commence in early 2020.
