Sony Adds Another Spider-Man Villain to Venom 2

As if Venom wasn’t going to have his hands full already, a new report suggests he’ll be fighting someone other than Carnage in his next movie. According to Deadline, the Spider-Man rogue known as Shriek has been added to Venom 2‘s screenplay.

Two sources close to the project confirmed the character’s appearance, but Sony has yet to make an official announcement. Considering the film is still in pre-production, they most likely won’t spill the beans until everything is set to go. Woody Harrelson is expected to return as Cletus Kassady after appearing in Venom‘s mid-credits scene last year. Of course, he’ll eventually bond with his own symbiote to become Carnage, one of Venom’s most notorious rivals.

Shriek’s involvement certainly makes the sequel a lot more interesting. Her real name is Frances Barrison, and she’s a mutant capable of unleashing powerful sonic blasts. Since symbiotes are vulnerable to sonics, this may pose a threat to Eddie Brock and his other half. Shriek can also dredge up her enemies’ darkest impulses, which might also play a part in separating Eddie and the symbiote.

It’s also worth mentioning that Shriek became Kasady’s girlfriend during the Maximum Carnage event. So whoever fills the role should probably have chemistry with Harrelson. One of Deadline’s sources revealed that Sony is currently looking at “many kinds of actresses” to play the character. But apparently, the studio would prefer it is she were an unknown.

Andy Serkis will direct Venom 2, taking over from Ruben Fleischer. Tom Hardy will once again return to the role of Eddie Brock/Venom, with Michelle Williams also coming back as Anne Weying. Although he’s no longer part of the franchise, Fleischer recently told Fandom that Sony is working toward a confrontation between Venom and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. However, time will tell if they can work out an arrangement with Marvel Studios to make this happen.

Venom 2 opens in theaters on October 2, 2020. Are you excited to see Shriek make her live-action debut in the sequel? Let us know in the comments below!
