Back in August, word broke that The Matrix 4 is in the works, with both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss slated to return as Neo and Trinity, respectively. Now, a new player has entered the Matrix. Variety is reporting that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has been cast in a leading role in The Matrix 4.
Abdul-Mateen previously portrayed Black Manta in Aquaman, and he had a cameo role in Jordan Peele’s Us. Additionally, Abdul-Mateen has a part in HBO’s Watchmen series and the leading role in Peele’s Candyman remake. Abdul-Mateen will also star in Netflix’s All Day and a Night, as well as Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7.
As noted in Variety, there is a rumor that The Matrix 4 will feature a younger version of Morpheus, the iconic character played by Laurence Fishburne. However, it’s unknown if Abdul-Mateen is up for that role or a different character in the film.

Lana Wachowski, the co-creator, co-writer, and co-director of The Matrix trilogy, will return to direct the sequel. Wachowski will also co-write the script with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. It’s unclear how Neo and Trinity will return, given that both died in The Matrix Revolutions. That film also ended with a new era of peace between the machines and the remnants of humanity.
The Matrix 4 will likely begin production in early 2020.
