Joker Sets a New October Record With $93.5 Million Opening

The Clown Prince of Crime easily dominated the box office this weekend. Via Deadline, director Todd Phillips’ Joker solo film set a new October record with a $93.5 million opening. Last year, Venom set the previous record with an $80 million opening weekend. While this opening is impressive, it may actually go higher. The final numbers will be released later today, but industry estimates suggest Joker may rise above $95 million or more. Needless to say, Joker came in well above Warner Bros.’ expectations.

Domestically, Joker almost matched Justice League‘s opening $93.8 million, and has a shot at exceeding it when Warner Bros. announces the final tally. Among DC adaptations, Joker and Justice League‘s opening weekends came in behind Man of Steel, Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Dark Knight.

Worldwide, Joker was also a huge success. Variety places Joker‘s international take as $140.5 million. South Korea had the biggest Joker opening with $16.3 million, while the United Kingdom came in second with $14.8 million for the film. Combined with Joker‘s domestic take, its current worldwide total is $234 million. However,  this total was accomplished without China, which has yet to approve Joker for a release.
