Taika Waititi May Join James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad

Marvel and DC fans often act like there’s serious enmity between the two companies, but most of these stories are overblown. Case in point: Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is about step into the DC Universe by helming The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. Now, it looks like Gunn is inviting another veteran of the MCU to join him on his excursion. Via Deadline, Taika Waititi may be up for a role in The Suicide Squad.

This report doesn’t specify which role Waititi would be playing in Gunn’s film. But given Waititi’s busy schedule, the part might not entail a lot of work. It’s possible that Gunn has him pegged for a voiceover role that only requires him to spend a few hours in a recording booth. Waititi’s upcoming slate includes promoting October’s Jojo Rabbit, directing Next Goal Wins for Fox Searchlight, and then turning his attention to Thor: Love and Thunder for Marvel Studios.

Deadline also notes that a Suicide Squad table read is set for September 11. The film will then begin production on September 23.

If he joins the film, Waititi wouldn’t be the only MCU alumnus in The Suicide Squad. Gunn previously recruited Ant-Man and the Wasp’s David Dastmalchian to play Polka-Dot Man in the upcoming film. Other new cast members include Idris Elba, Storm Reid, Daniela Melchior, Flula Borg, Steve Agee, and Nathan Fillion.

The Suicide Squad is targeting an August 6, 2021 release date.
