The Matrix 4 Is Happening With Keanu Reeves & Carrie-Anne Moss

Twenty years ago, the Wachowski’s iconic film, The Matrix, stunned moviegoers and ushered in a new era. Now, Lana Wachowski is coming back to the franchise to write and direct a new Matrix sequel.

According to Variety, both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are set to return as well. That’s a neat trick considering that their respective characters, Neo and Trinity, both perished in The Matrix Revolutions. Additionally, there’s no word yet on whether Laurence Fishburne will return, despite Morpheus’ survival. Strangely the report states that “some sources say [Morpheus] may be recast for a younger version but that element has still not been made clear.”

Wachowski is co-writing the script with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. Variety’s sources indicate that the sequel may begin production in early 2020.

“We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana,” said Warner Bros. Pictures Chairman Toby Emmerich. “Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.”

“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,” added Wachowski. “I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

Variety’s report also indicates that Reeves’ success with the John Wick films helped spark the Matrix revival.
