The Russo Brothers Admit Nova Isn’t In Avengers: Endgame

It seems like Anthony and Joe Russo can’t resist teasing Marvel fans even months after Avengers: Endgame hit theaters. The Russos recently teamed up with WIRED for a new installment of their “Tech Support” video series. When asked why a member of the Nova Corps didn’t join the final battle against Thanos, the Russos jokingly indicated that they had put the original Nova (Richard Rider) in the background.

“Look closely at that scene again,” said Joe Russo. “And you will see Richard Rider in the background of a shot. Easter egg.”

However, fans took the Russos at their word and began pouring over the footage to find Nova. Via ComicBook.com, the Russos finally said that their claim was in jest.

“That was actually a joke on our part,” admitted Joe Russo.

The Nova Corps were introduced into the MCU in the original Guardians of the Galaxy film. Rhomann Dey (John C. Reilly) and Irani Rael (Glenn Close) both have comic book counterparts. But neither Richard Rider nor his successor, Sam Alexander, have appeared in the MCU. Adam McKay previously shared that Marvel was “kicking around” an idea for a Nova film, although the studio never actually confirmed this.

Within Marvel’s comic book universe, Rhomann Dey was the last surviving member of the Nova Corps. Rhomann gave Richard his uniform, which allowed him to become Nova. Richard has had a long stint as Nova, including his run with the New Warriors in the ’90s.
