It seems that the G.I. Joe spinoff Snake Eyes may have found its lead actor at last. According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, Henry Golding is in negotiations to star in the upcoming Paramount production. Golding’s credits include portraying rich boy Nick Young in Crazy Rich Asians, and a leading role in the romantic comedy Last Christmas as well as in Guy Ritchie’s crime thriller The Gentlemen.

A ninja commando known for his deadly ability with a sword and trench knives, Snake Eyes is also a highly skilled martial artist who can be just as dangerous unarmed. He lived in solitude in the High Sierras when he was recruited to join G.I. Joe. His real name, as well as his backstory, have long been sources of mystery. Caught in a helicopter explosion, he sustained heavy scarring and lost his voice. To hide his face, he usually appears in a black balaclava and matching bodysuit.

Snake Eyes made his live-action debut in the film adaptation G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. In that film and its sequel, Ray Park portrayed the character.

Robert Schwentke (RED, R.I.P.D.) will direct the upcoming Snake Eyes movie from a screenplay by Evan Spiliotopoulous (Bright 2, The Huntsman: Winter’s War). The latter is currently working on the script, rumored to focus on Snake Eyes seeking revenge for his father’s death by joining a ninja clan.

The G.I. Joe spinoff Snake Eyes will hit theaters on March 27, 2020. How do you think Henry Golding will fare as Snake Eyes? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
