Paramount and Hasbro are Developing a New G.I. Joe Spinoff

In spite of the franchise’s lukewarm history on the big screen, Paramount seems committed to building a new G.I. Joe cinematic universe. The studio is already developing a reboot of the main series as well as a Snake Eyes spinoff. But apparently, Snake Eyes isn’t the only character getting a standalone film. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Paramount and Hasbro are planning yet another G.I. Joe spinoff.

The report doesn’t offer a lot of details about this film. However, they claim it will be an “ensemble piece,” which suggests that it will feature an offshoot collection of Joes separate from the primary team. THR also notes that one of these characters will be Chuckles, the floral shirt-wearing undercover specialist. Chuckles made his first appearance as an action figure in 1987 and went on to appear in Marvel’s G.I. Joe comic series that same year. However, Chuckles was more prominently featured in IDW’s G.I. Joe comics. If Chuckles does indeed show up in the new movie, it will mark the character’s debut appearance in live-action.

To craft the film’s story, the studio has enlisted the screenwriting duo of Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec. The pair previously worked together on the 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot as well as its 2016 sequel. They also penned Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol in 2011. Appelbaum and Nemec’s most recent screenwriting effort is the animated film Wonder Park, which hit theaters earlier this year.
