The Lion King Holds Off Once Upon a Time in Hollywood at the Box Office

The Lion King Holds off Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Disney’s domination of the summer box office is far from over. In its second weekend, The Lion King added an additional $75.5 million and easily repeated as the number 1 film. Its domestic total is now $350 million. Meanwhile, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood gave the director his best opening yet. It came in at #2 with $40.3 million, which was nearly $10 million higher than it was projected to do.

Spider-Man: Far From Home had a fairly modest take at #3, with $12.2 million. However, Spidey’s domestic total is now $344.4 million and its already surpassed $1 billion worldwide. Only Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 have been bigger domestic hits with Peter Parker’s alter ego, with $403.3 million and $373 million, respectively. It doesn’t look like Far From Home will catch up to either film, but it’s still firmly a win for Sony, Marvel, and Disney.

Speaking of Disney dominance, Toy Story 4 is hanging on at #4 with $9.8 million, and a new $395.6 million total. Paramount’s Crawl is turning into a sleeper hit at #5, with $4 million in its third weekend. The Beatles-inspired music fantasy, Yesterday, landed at #6 with $3 million.

Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin was still impressive in its tenth weekend. It came in at #7 with $2.8 million, which brings its total to $345.9 million. At number 8, Stuber finished with $1.67 million, while Annabelle Comes Home scared up $1.56 in ninth place. Rounding out the top 10 was The Farewell, which had $1.55 million.

Looking ahead, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw is the only real contender to go up against The Lion King next weekend. It may even be enough to win the box office crown.
