Joker Set to Premiere at the Venice International Film Festival

Not a lot of comic book movies make the rounds during festival season. But Joker isn’t like other comic book movies. Director Todd Phillips has already said that the film tells an original story that doesn’t have any basis in the DC Comics mythology. And in about a month, the gathered masses at the Venice International Film Festival will be the first to bear witness. Via ScreenCrush, Joker will have its world premiere at the 76th annual event.

Phillips made this announcement on his Instagram page. You can check out what he had to say below.

This news comes two days after it was revealed that Joker will also screen at the Toronto International Film Festival. Its appearance at TIFF will mark its North American debut ahead of its wide release on October 4. Needless to say, Joker’s presence at these events all but confirm that it takes a more “art house” approach than the average superhero (or villain) fare. However, even more shocking is that the film will also compete for Venice’s Golden Lion prize. In recent years, that award has gone to the likes of Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma and Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water.

The Venice International Film Festival will be held from August 29 to September 7. Are you more excited to see Joker now that it’s being featured on the festival circuit? Tell us what you think in the comment section below!
