Spider-Man: Far From Home Tops Toys At the Weekend Box Office

Unless you’re John Wick, a group of sentient toys, or the Avengers, it’s been a tough summer for sequels. But Spider-Man: Far From Home‘s MCU connections once again elevated the webslinger. With $93.6 million, Far From Home was easily the new weekend box office champion. From its release date on Tuesday, July 2 through Thursday, July 4, Far From Home pulled in approximately $91.5 million. That means it more than doubled its domestic run in three days, with a new running total of $185 million.

For the first time since its release, Pixar’s Toy Story 4 fell to second place with $34.3 million. Its new domestic total is $306.6 million, and Toy Story 4 will likely pass Aladdin soon. Coming in at #3 was the Beatles inspired musical fantasy, Yesterday, which had $10.8 million. At number 4, Annabelle Comes Home had $9.75 million.

Aladdin remained in the top five with $7.6 million in its seventh week. The live-action Disney remake now stands at $320.8 million domestically and around $900 million worldwide. Ironically, Aladdin may finish the summer well behind Disney’s Marvel and Pixar films, as well as the upcoming Lion King remake. However, the House of Mouse can’t be unhappy with these numbers.

A24’s horror film, Midsommar, scared up $6.5 million for the sixth slot. The Secret Life of Pets 2 followed at #7 with $4.76 million. Meanwhile, Men in Black: International had only $3.6 million at number 8. But that still came in higher than Avengers: Endgame; which finished at #9 with a meager $3.41 million in the shadow of Far From Home. It seems that Endgame never got a sizable bump from Spidey’s new film, but its domestic total rose to $847.8 million. Finally, Rocketman wrapped up the top 10 with $2.77 million.

Looking ahead, Far From Home has little competition until The Lion King arrives on July 19. At that point, there’s going to be a new king of the box office.
