Avengers: Endgame Directors Address the Fates of Gamora & Captain America

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Avengers: Endgame!

This past weekend, Marvel re-released Avengers: Endgame as part of its “Bring Back Event.” Directors Anthony and Joe Russo gamely played along by going out on a new round of press appearances. While speaking with Fox 5 DC, the Russos were asked about some of Endgame‘s lingering questions regarding Gamora and Captain America.

In the film, Gamora traveled from 2014 to 2023 with Thanos’ armada before turning against him in the final battle. Iron Man “snapped” away Thanos and his army, but Gamora’s fate was intentionally vague. And the Russos weren’t feeling particularly forthcoming.

“The argument could be that Tony wished away all the evil,” said Joe Russo. “Was she evil or just the enemy? Is she still alive? Who knows, that’s a story for another time.”

Anthony Russo replied with a question of his own: “If Tony wanted to get rid of Thanos and his entire army, was she still part of his army?”

Cap’s fate wasn’t as ambiguous as Gamora’s. He stayed behind in the past to live out his life with Peggy Carter. The only argument has been about whether Cap stayed in the MCU’s prime timeline or whether he created a new one. Screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely insisted that Cap didn’t create a new timeline. However, the Russo brothers feel differently.

“The way that it would work is that when Captain America goes back, he would create a branch reality,” related Joe Russo. “Now he would exist in that branch reality with a second Captain America who was frozen in ice…Now what’s also a story for another time is, of course, if he created a branch reality, he would then have to use a Pym Particle to come back to this reality to hand that shield off.”
