Last weekend, Avengers: Endgame dropped to #10 at the box office after nearly two months in theaters. Currently, the film is approximately $45 million behind Avatar‘s all-time global record. And if Marvel’s latest move is successful, Endgame may get a second wind before Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters.
Via ComicBook.com, Marvel’s Kevin Feige confirmed that Endgame is coming back to theaters with brand new footage. It’s also happening much sooner than anyone predicted.
“We are doing [a re-release],” said Feige. “I don’t know if it’s been announced. And I don’t know how much [new footage]… Yeah, we’re doing it next weekend.”
In a follow up interview with ScreenRant, Feige said that the re-release will not be an extended cut. Instead, “there will be a version going into theaters with a bit of a marketing push with a few new things at the end of the movie. If you stay and watch the movie, after the credits, there’ll be a deleted scene, a little tribute, and a few surprises.”

Assuming Feige is correct about the re-release date, Endgame‘s biggest competition in theaters would be Pixar’s Toy Story 4. A single week to promote the re-release isn’t ideal, but it was clearly timed to coincide with the impending arrival of Far From Home. That Spidey flick could give the Endgame re-release an added boost over the fourth of July weekend. Back in April, Endgame‘s halo effect pushed Captain Marvel back up the charts to #2. While an extended Endgame probably won’t be able to match that feat, it could leapfrog over several of this summer’s under-performing sequels.
