David Harbour Acknowledges ‘Major Problems’ With Hellboy Reboot

Hellboy’s 25th anniversary was the perfect time for Mike Mignola’s pulp superhero to return to the big screen. Unfortunately, last month’s reboot arrived with little more than a whimper. Poor reviews and underwhelming box office figures bogged down its release. Additionally, there were reports of alleged infighting between director Neil Marshall and two producers during filming. Now that he doesn’t have to promote it, David Harbour is offering his own thoughts on the movie’s performance.

While speaking with Digital Spy, Harbour admitted his personal disappointment in the finished film. Moreover, he seemed to confirm that the movie suffered due to creative differences between the filmmakers.

“We did our best, but there’s so many voices that go into these things and they’re not always going to work out,” said Harbour. “I did what I could do and I feel proud of what I did, but ultimately I’m not in control of a lot of those things.”

Harbour will also appear in Marvel’s Black Widow, so Hellboy won’t be his final appearance within the comic book movie realm. Surprisingly, Harbour suggested that Marvel’s virtual monopoly on superhero movies didn’t help Hellboy’s lackluster box office.

“The problem that I have with comic book movies nowadays is that I think, and it’s a result of the power of Marvel stuff, it’s like chocolate, it’s a flavour,” explained Harbour. “So everybody goes chocolate is delicious and these guys make the best chocolate. So as you judge the movies, it’s like, ‘Well it’s not as chocolatey as this, this does not taste like chocolate at all’. And I sort of want a world where there’s more flavours than just comparisons to chocolate. So in that way when Hellboy is viewed on the chocolate spectrum, it does very poorly. That being said, it also has major problems.”

Regardless, Harbour still thinks anyone who hasn’t seen Hellboy should still give it a chance.

“I think as a rental or as a movie that you see on an aeroplane, I think you’d be like, ‘Oh that was fun’ because it’s a fun movie, and I think it was unfairly bludgeoned as a result of these comparisons,” added Harbour.
