Dan Aykroyd: Ghostbusters 3 Will Rely On ‘Practical’ Effects

Jason Reitman’s unnamed Ghostbusters sequel is moving right along with its development. Longtime series star Dan Aykroyd recently spoke with Joblo about just how old-school its production will be. Rather than utilizing CGI (like the last 2016 reboot), it’s going to rely more on practical effects – in line with the original films.

“I ’m always urging to use puppets,” explained Aykroyd. “I’m always urging to go back to the mechanicals. But CGI is so efficient and easy to use, but I think that all of us are on board with the idea of maybe doing mechanicals and puppets where we can.”

The original Ghostbusters film in 1984 utilized these “puppets” to great effect. Slimer stood out as a key character with this method. The retro design of the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man stood out as well, with the “actor in a suit” approach instead of CGI.

With that in mind, Aykroyd hopes that the budget won’t get out of hand going back to those old methods.

“It’s definitely going to be way under $100 (million),” said Aykroyd. “I would think. It can’t be $30 (million), $50 (million) would be stretching it.”

Aykroyd will play a big part in the forthcoming Ghostbusters Fan Fest. It’s set to take place at the Sony Pictures Studio Lot on June 7-8, with details available here. Both Jason and original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman will be on hand. There’s a possibility a reveal of footage from the film might happen at the event, but there’s nothing official just yet. Fingers crossed that fans will see more of it soon – along with a hint of those old-school effects

The next Ghostbusters movie is set to hit on July 10, 2020.
