New Captain Marvel Featurette Gives Goose His Due

Captain Marvel took fans back to 1995 to explore a previously unseen chapter in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And while Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers asserted herself as welcome addition to the MCU, there was another character who managed to upstage her in several scenes. Of course, we’re talking about Goose, the Flerken cat.

Ahead of Captain Marvel’s home video release, Entertainment Weekly has previewed a new featurette highlighting Goose’s role in the film. In keeping with the film’s mid-’90s tone, the clip comes complete with an epic-voiced narrator and a hazy VHS veneer. But more importantly, it provides often hilarious insight into the alien feline’s journey to the big screen.

“When we were working on the first outline for this movie, and we shared it with Kevin Feige, his first note was, ‘We need 200% more Goose,” joked co-director Anna Boden. “We gave it to him.”

The video also showcases concept art and new behind-the-scenes footage. Although his job was primarily to look adorable, casting Goose was no easy feat. Executive producer Jonathan Schwartz explained that they “auditioned a few different cats.” However, they wound up mainly using a tabby named Reggie. According to the narrator, “Reggie’s unique sense of humor and comedic timing were an asset to filmmakers.”

Goose proved to be a reliable source of comic relief throughout Captain Marvel’s runtime. He was also a vital part of the film’s marketing campaign. Back in February, Marvel broadcasted an hour-long livestream of the cat just playing with toys and napping. Even Nick Fury himself, Samuel L. Jackson, showed up to say hi.

Captain Marvel will be available to own digitally on May 28 and on Blu-ray on June 11. You can view the film’s Goose featurette below, then tell us what you think in the comment section!
