Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame!
Moviegoers were stunned when the Red Skull showed up in Avengers: Infinity War as the keeper of the Soul Stone. After this, a rematch between the Nazi supervillain and his old nemesis, Captain America, seemed like a possibility. This obviously didn’t happen onscreen in Avengers: Endgame. However, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have confirmed that the two definitely crossed paths when Cap returned the Soul Stone to Vormir.
“He would have to encounter Red Skull,” Joe Russo recently told CinemaBlend. But he added that “nobody knows what the rules are when you return the Soul Stone.”
It’s hard to tell if Joe is playing coy or if he genuinely doesn’t know what would happen once the stone was returned to its original location. Regardless, Anthony Russo chimed in with his own thoughts on the matter.
“Knowing Red Skull, he probably has a ‘no money back’ policy,” said Anthony Russo; which may be his way of saying that Black Widow isn’t coming back from Vormir.

Having Steve Rogers encounter the Red Skull for the first time since 1945 could have been a nice bit of fan service. However, a meeting like that demands plenty of screen time that can’t just be tacked onto the end of a three-hour movie.
Additionally, the Skull described his 70-year exile on Vormir as a sobering reminder of his own hubris in Infinity War. With that, it doesn’t seem likely that he still holds any serious animosity toward Captain America. Regardless, it’s hard to picture the characters being cordial towards each other, even after so many decades.
