The Russo Bros. Say Marvel Will Introduce a Gay Character Soon

With its forthcoming Phase 4 films, Marvel Studios should really shake things up with a new storyline. And that brings a number of ideas – including the debut of LGBTQ characters within its universe. Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo recently spoke about this during an interview with Sirius XM radio. The interviewer asks him about which Marvel characters may be gay. He didn’t indicate who it was, but did note that fans will find out sooner rather than later.

“There is a gay character coming up in one of their films,” explained Joe Russo. “I think Kevin [Feige[ will make that announcement, I’m sure, pretty soon.”

Russo actually introduced such an idea with his cameo in Endgame. He portrays a character who’s nervous about dating again after Thanos’ snap. However, Captain America (Chris Evans) praises him for taking the jump. To which Russo’s character responds he’s ready to see “him” again on a second date. That made him the first openly gay Marvel character in the MCU films.

Last year, Kevin Feige noted that there would be more LGBTQ characters in the Marvel universe. He also hinted that they would be “both ones you’ve seen and ones you haven’t seen.”

One likely place we could see one of these characters is in The Eternals. It was rumored that one of the main characters would be “openly gay/bisexual.” Tessa Thompson also feels that her Thor: Ragnarok character, Valkyrie, is a bisexual. She noted in a 2017 tweet, “She’s bi. And yes, she cares very little about what men think of her. What a joy to play!” However, Valkyrie has yet to display that side of herself onscreen.
