Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has been promising to give fans an immersive Star Wars experience ever since it was announced. From boutiques that sell Jedi robes to cantinas that serve “authentic” intergalactic cuisine, Disney went all out to make guests feel like they’re actually passing through the Outer Rim planet of Batuu. Of course, it wouldn’t be a true Star Wars adventure without a rousing musical fanfare. That’s why Disney enlisted franchise mainstay John Williams to write a new symphonic suite for Galaxy’s Edge. Williams’ involvement with Galaxy’s Edge was confirmed back in November when the 14-acre park was still under construction. Entertainment Weekly previewed his contributions with a video of the music being recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios. The score doesn’t sound like it hearkens back to any existing Star Wars theme, but this isn’t a negative. The five-minute suite proves that even at 87, Williams is still one of the most gifted composers in the movie biz. Williams will also return to compose the music for December’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
The park’s Batuu setting is supposedly a haven for the galaxy’s morally flexible, but Williams’ score doesn’t reflect that. Instead, it’s a more empowering orchestral melody befitting a hero of the Resistance. This is fitting, since one of the attraction’s rides, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, drafts visitors into a mission against Kylo Ren and his First Order. There, they’ll meet up with the likes of Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, and BB-8.
