James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad reboot/sequel was initially purported to feature an entirely fresh cast of anti-heroes. But now, we know that we’ll be seeing at least one familiar face from the original film. According to /Film, Jai Courtney will be reprising his role as George “Digger” Harkness, a.k.a. Captain Boomerang, who made his DCEU debut in 2016’s Suicide Squad.
Courtney revealed his involvement during a recent interview with Business Insider. He also provided some new info on when production might start. “We’re getting ready to shoot in a few months’ time,” Courtney said. “There’s not much else I can reveal about it but yet, you’ll be seeing Boomerang back for sure. I’m happy, it’s going to be fun. It will be different, for sure, but it’s going to be great.”

In the first movie, Harkness was depicted as a boorish thief with an unrepentant fondness for alcohol. Director David Ayer apparently advised Courtney to “find your inner s***bag” when developing his performance for the film. Once cameras start rolling on The Suicide Squad, Courtney’s Captain Boomerang will appear alongside Ratcatcher, King Shark, Polka-Dot Man, and Peacemaker. Those roles haven’t been cast yet.
Technically, Captain Boomerang won’t be the only character getting his second chance on the big screen. Deadshot will also have an expanded presence in The Suicide Squad, with Idris Elba taking over for Will Smith. Additionally, there have been unverified reports that Margot Robbie might come back as Harley Quinn. Robbie is currently reapplying Harley’s clown makeup for her return in Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey. The jury’s still out on whether Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag will return for the next installment as well.
