In the closing moments of Avengers: Infinity War‘s post credits scene, Nick Fury desperately sent a message to Carol Danvers through a pager. Captain Marvel gave fans the backstory between Carol and Fury, as well as the origin of that intergalactic pager. However, it doesn’t definitively answer why Fury waited over two decades to ask Carol for help. After all, the MCU is a very dangerous place. The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron both featured potentially extinction level threats that could have wiped out humanity. Now that Captain Marvel is in theaters, Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Feige have shared their reasons why Fury didn’t call in Carol sooner.
“She said only in emergencies,” said Jackson during an interview with IGN. “Other emergencies could be handled by the people who were present. It’s just an alien invasion, that’s something that could be handled. Half the population wasn’t dying and flaking off and doing whatever.”
“We finally have an emergency that I feel warrants her presence,” added Jackson. “This is unprecedented. How are you gonna fight that? I can’t fight that. If I’m not here, I need to find someone to come here who can handle it. All those people are ineffective. They’re great for normal, everyday world disaster. But intergalactic badass who has all the Infinity Stones needs a bit more.”

While speaking with Slash Film, Feige echoed Jackson’s answer before offering the possibility of a reunion we didn’t get to see yet.
“One, she does say it’s gotta be a real emergency, right? Yeah,” said Feige. “The other thing I’d say is how do you know he never hit it? How do we know he never pushed it before? We’ve never seen him push it before. That doesn’t mean he never did.”
If the inevitable Captain Marvel sequel once again takes place in the past, it could potentially show another team up between Carol and Fury. But in the meantime, Carol will return in Avengers: Endgame on April 26.
