Captain Marvel Soars With $157 Million Opening Weekend

Prior to this weekend, early projections for Captain Marvel had it earning anywhere between $100 million to $135 million. However, Marvel’s latest film easily outperformed those numbers with an estimated $157 million opening.

Via Deadline, Captain Marvel took in $62 million on Friday, including $20 million from Thursday night previews. On Saturday, Captain Marvel had $53 million, and it’s projected to get an additional $42 million on Sunday. If the film beats its Sunday estimates, then its total could climb even higher. As it stands, Captain Marvel will have the MCU’s seventh highest opening to date. Marvel Studios’ first female led superhero film, Captain Marvel also outperformed its DC counterpart, Wonder Woman‘s $103 million opening. However, it’s still to early to tell if Captain Marvel can match the staying power that Wonder Woman had in the summer of 2017. Wonder Woman ultimately took in $412 million, domestically.

There was, and continues to be, a very vocal contingent of moviegoers who attempted to review bomb Captain Marvel on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB. That backlash failed to make a significant impact on Captain Marvel‘s opening weekend. Intriguingly, Deadline reported that men were Captain Marvel‘s leading demo.

Internationally, Captain Marvel is also performing very well, with approximately $300 million this weekend. If those numbers hold up, the film will have a worldwide total of nearly $460 million by Monday.
