Matt Smith Joins Sony’s Morbius the Living Vampire

Sony is moving ahead with the next entry in their shared universe of films headlined by Marvel characters. According to Variety, Matt Smith has entered final talks to star alongside Jared Leto in Morbius the Living Vampire.

Smith is best known as the Eleventh incarnation of the Doctor on BBC’s Doctor Who. After wrapping his four-year stint on that series, Smith transitioned to film roles in other genre fare like Terminator Genisys and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. In 2016, Smith portrayed Prince Philip on Netflix’s The Crown, a role which earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Variety doesn’t indicate who Smith will play in the film. However, rumor has it that Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama’s script features Loxias Crown as the villain. Potentially, Smith could take on that role.

Next up, Smith will star as famed photographer Robert Mapplethorpe in an eponymous biopic directed by Ondi TImoner. He also has an undisclosed role in Star Wars: Episode IX.

Producer Avi Arad previously indicated that Morbius will commence shooting in February. Leto will portray Michael Morbius, a scientist who accidentally transforms himself into a vampire. Adria Arjona will play Martine Bancroft, Michael’s lover.
