New Venom TV Spots Reveal a Terrible Friendship

Sony Hires Kelly Marcel to Write Venom 2

Despite initial skepticism, Venom racked up a worldwide box office total of $855 million during its theatrical run. Whether fans like it or not, a sequel is inevitable. Now Sony has taken the first step toward developing another installment. According to Variety, the studio has tapped Kelly Marcel to write and executive produce Venom 2.

Marcel made up one third of the original Venom’s screenwriting team, which included Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. She previously adapted E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey for Universal in 2015 and co-wrote 2013’s Saving Mr. Banks. Marcel also co-created the short-lived sci-fi series Terra Nova. That series was executive produced by Steven Spielberg and aired on Fox for one 13-episode season in 2011. Sony wouldn’t comment on Marcel’s hiring for Venom 2. However, she’s expected to receive a substantial pay increase from the first film.

Tom Hardy is set to reprise his role as Eddie Brock in the sequel along with Michelle Williams’ Anne Weying. Before the original was released, Hardy revealed to TotalFilm (via ComicBook.com) last summer that he’s contracted to appear in two more Venom films for Sony. But if we had to hazard a guess, it seems likely that Sony will eventually bring Venom together with its other Spider-Man adjacent characters, including Jared Leto’s Morbius the Living Vampire.

As teased in Venom’s mid-credits scene, Hardy will square off against Woody Harrelson’s Cletus Kassady / Carnage in Venom 2. Because Reuben Fleischer will be busy with Zombieland 2, Variety notes Sony will likely on the lookout for someone else to fill the director’s chair.
