Sony Reveals New AR Program for Into the Spider-Verse

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is coming next month, and Sony is crossing over the film into the augmented reality market. The studio has partnered with platform developers 8th Wall and Trigger to create a new Spidey-themed AR program. Via The Hollywood Reporter, it’s conveniently titled Spider-Verse Web AR Experience.

Rather than downloading an app, users can visit intothespiderverse-ar.com on any mobile device to access the program. It offers the ability to insert Spider-Man into your photos and then share those pictures with friends. So far, it looks as though you can only access the Miles Morales version of Spider-Man. But in the weeks leading up to the movie’s premiere, it’s possible that 8th Wall and Trigger will include more of the film’s central characters. These include Peter Parker, Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Ham, and Peni Parker.

“Spider-Man is a perfect match for AR not only because his acrobatic moves and iconic poses lend themselves well to the format, but because he’s one of the most relatable superheroes,” said Rose Phillips, senior vice president of Digital Marketing at Sony Pictures Entertainment. “We’re excited to collaborate with 8th Wall, Amazon Sumerian and Trigger on Spider-Verse Web AR Experience and bring it to all – and new – Spider-Man fans.”

This isn’t the first time that Sony has combined Spider-Man with AR technology. In 2012, the studio released a similar app to coincide with the release of The Amazing Spider-Man. “Spider-Man is in our DNA,” said Jason Yim, Trigger’s CEO and Executive Creative Director. “My team has been a digital developer since the first Spider-Man film and Trigger has been developing AR for Spider-Man properties at Sony Pictures since 2014. We’re excited to continue this longstanding collaboration with this experience for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”
