LEGO Batman Movie Director to Direct Jonny Quest Film

Chris McKay, the director of The Lego Batman Movie, has been picked to direct the upcoming Jonny Quest film. The Wrap has the scoop on the newest franchise McKay will oversee.

Jonny Quest follows a young boy who travels the world with his father, Benton Quest, an adventurous scientist. They are joined by Benton’s bodyguard, Race Bannon, as well as Jonny’s adoptive brother, Hadji. The Wrap also mentions a “major movie star” is wanted to play Race Bannon. For earlier versions of the movie, the studio reportedly wanted Zac Efron as Jonny Quest and Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson as Race Bannon. However, it’s extremely unlikely that either actor will star in the newest iteration.

The Adventures of Jonny Quest debuted in 1964 from Hanna-Barbera Productions. The show was so beloved that it aired for decades, despite having only 26 episodes. It can still be found to this day. A follow up series called The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest debuted in 1996. It introduced Jessie Bannon to the extended team, but it only ran for a single season on Cartoon Network.

The Quest family hasn’t had any new on screen adventures since, save for the 2015 direct-to-DVD movie Tom and Jerry: Spy Quest. Jonny and his family also appeared in Future Quest, a Hanna-Barbera team up comic that DC published from 2016 to 2017.

There is currently no release date for the Jonny Quest movie. McKay is attached to direct a Nightwing movie based on ex-Robin, Dick Grayson. He is also slated to direct the new Dungeons and Dragons movie, which has yet to officially start.
