New Story Details Emerge About the Canceled Boba Fett Standalone Film

A number of Star Wars fans were burned by Friday’s news regarding Lucasfilm’s decision to cancel the Boba Fett standalone feature. Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we have new details about what the film could have been.

According to EW, the spinoff would have featured Boba Fett alongside a team of bounty hunters. More specifically, Fett’s fellow bounty hunters were Bossk, Dengar, IG-88, 4-LOM, and Zuckuss. In The Empire Strikes Back, Darth Vader gathered the mercenaries on the deck of his Star Destroyer for one purpose. He offered a reward for the live capture of the Millenium Falcon’s crew following their narrow escape on Hoth. Humorously, Vader singled out Fett and warned him, “no disintegrations.” The assembled bounty hunters went on to appear in several Expanded Universe stories.

EW states that Lucasfilm originally tapped director Josh Trank to helm the Boba Fett spin-off. Trank famously worked his way onto the industry’s radar after the success of his found-footage “superhero” film, Chronicle. Unfortunately, even before his 2015 Fantastic Four reboot proved to be an unmitigated disaster, his filmmaking future was called into question. Trank left the project soon after. Earlier this year, Logan director James Mangold was rumored to be writing and directing the Boba Fett movie. Mangold has yet to issue a comment on the recent news.

Lucasfilm is currently putting all of its efforts into developing The Mandalorian, a new TV series for Disney’s upcoming streaming service. The Jon Favreau-produced venture picks up a few years after Return of the Jedi and centers on a new warrior protagonist. As the title implies, the character possesses Mandalorian armor similar to Boba Fett’s signature suit.
