Viewers are wondering if two Gundam GQuuuuuuX characters, Machu and Nyaan, are gay. The series isn’t a stranger to LGTBQ relationships, though it tends to dance around the topic. However, after fans positively responded to Suletta and Miorine’s maybe-relationship in The Witch From Mercury, there are theories that Sunrise might be leaning into a pair of lesbian leads in GQuX.

So far, there are only a couple of hints that Machu and Nyaan might be gay and have a romantic connection in Gundam GQuuuuuuX. The first occurs when Machu confronts Nyaan for stealing her bag on the roof. Machu slips and falls into Nyaan’s arms, and the two seem to have a “moment.” Additionally, the animation for the ending credits shows the two hanging out, and some have interpreted that the scenes shown indicate they’re more than friends.

However, there haven’t been any overt signs that Machu and Nyaan are attracted to each other yet. In episode one, they’re barely acquaintances, and the moment on the roof might have indicated some sort of Newtype connection rather than a hint toward a future romance.

Sunrise seems reluctant to confirm characters as LGBTQ in Gundam. Even Sueletta and Miorine aren’t confirmed to be lesbians. Their relationship is officially left up to interpretation despite their obvious romantic interest in one another and their marriage at the conclusion of the series.

For now, fans will have to wait patiently for clearer signals from Gundam GQuuuuuuX. Machu and Nyaan’s relationship remains ambiguous, fitting Sunrise’s long-standing pattern of leaving LGBTQ representation to audience interpretation. Given recent positive reactions, Sunrise may indeed explore their dynamic further, but viewers shouldn’t expect definitive confirmation that they’re lesbians anytime soon—especially if the studio continues its tradition of subtly dancing around explicit LGBTQ themes rather than openly embracing them.
