Kraven the Hunter just released and it name-dropped a key character from Marvel Comics lore, Miles Warren, who is best known amongst hardcore comic book and Spider-Man fans as the villain, The Jackal. However, people unaware of the character’s significance are wondering what his role in the film and the comics is.
Curious about who Miles Warren in Kraven the Hunter is and The Jackal’s role in Marvel Comics? Here is everything you need to know.
Miles Warren in Kraven and his Jackal in Marvel comics explained
In Kraven the Hunter, Miles Warren is a mysterious doctor based in New York. He never actually appears in the film but is mentioned by Aleksei Systevich and Dmitri Smerdyakov. Both Aleksei and Dmitri mention Warren as the reason behind their respective powers and identities as The Rhino and The Chameleon.
However, Miles Warren aka The Jackal has a significant role in Marvel Comics, typically in Spider-Man stories. He has nothing to do with the origins of Rhino and Chameleon.
In the comics, Warren is a biochemistry professor at Empire State University, attended by Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy. He also learned about genetics from the High Evolutionary. In his time affiliated with the High Evolutionary, Warren contributed to creating a creature called Man-Jackal. Unfortunately, the creature managed to escape and seemingly killed Warren’s family, the trauma of which drove Warren insane.
Warren was eventually asked to leave the High Evolutionary because of his strong influence over the New Men and his cloning experiments.
Miles Warren and Spider-Man’s conflict began when he developed feelings for Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker’s girlfriend. After Stacy’s iconic and tragic death at the hands of Green Goblin, Warren blamed Spider-Man for her death.
Following this, Warren created various clones of both Stacy and Peter Parker, including Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider, in his revenge campaign against the wallcrawler. This eventually drove him insane and he developed a secret identity of The Jackal. He also tried to hire or manipulate other villains/anti-heroes like Scorpion, Tarantula, and The Punisher into killing Spider-Man, only to ultimately fail.
