Super7 ThunderCats SDCC Exclusives Light It Up

A fondly remembered action feature of ’80s ThunderCats action figures was the way Lion-O and Mumm-Ra’s eyes would light up when a battery-powered ring was pressed to their backs. The ring is long gone, but Super7 is finally delivering the iconic faction leaders with light-up features. These days, batteries are small enough to fit inside figures, and it appears that the Lion-O has a whole new chest to accommodate, with mid-torso articulation rather than the Masters of the Universe Classics ab-crunch from the old Mattel molds.

Eyes up

Mumm-Ra will also feature a light-up chest symbol, and the eyes will work with included interchangeable heads. In addition, both figures will include glow-in-the-dark swords.

There’s one more exclusive figure, but this one is less visible rather than more. Ghost Grune depicts the resurrected villain in translucent tinted plastic, keeping echoes of his color scheme but making him see-through. The show-accurate seal of Grune depicts both a pentagram and a cross, which would probably make it a tough sale at mass retail.

Here’s the catch: Super7 won’t actually have these in hand at Comic-Con. They will be taking preorders (with free shipping) at their booth. A limited quantity will go online on Monday, July 29th, but if you’re at SDCC and want them, the safest bet is to preorder then. There will be prototypes on display so you can see what you’ll be getting, at booth 2543.

How long before Super7 tries Battle-Matic Action again? It feels like action features returning are going to be a thing now. LJN’s ThunderCats line, with the Berzerkers and the Ram-Pagers, had its share of unusually powered figures designed around play gimmicks.
