Doctor. Octopus. No defensive “Doc Ock” moniker that feels embarrassed by his full comic-book name. That sums up the newest One:12 Collective figure by Mezco, which is pure, unabashed, original comics appearance Doctor Octopus. Green spandex. Orange trim. Plus a white labcoat, if you really want to hide that classic ’60s costumey goodness. As for that face, well, no Hollywood actor to play the role would ever want to look that ugly. In the sixties, though, that Beatles haircut was cool. Not so much any more.
Eight Arms to Hold You
Dr. Otto Octavius’ super-villain origin is so retro, it’s awesome in its simplicity. As with most early Spider-Man villains, Stan Lee depended on his readers believing radiation can do anything. A radioactive spider bit Peter Parker; experiments with radiation caused Octavius’ mechanical accessories to fuse to his body and come under the control of his mind. The rest of us would just get cancer; they got powers. And it seems names are destiny; as J. Jonah Jameson put it in Spider-Man 2, what are the odds that a man named Octavius would wind up with eight limbs?
Per Mezco’s description, “Straight from the comic pages, the One:12 Collective Doctor Octopus is dressed in his classic green bodysuit, featuring a removable lab coat and three interchangeable head portraits in varying expressions. The maniacal menace wields his signature weapon— sets of four highly posable, tentacle-like arms in different lengths that are assembled on his back, complete with multiple interchangeable claws for each arm.”
Mezco’s prices are rising — $112 for a fairly basic figure without massive accessories is in the high range. Maybe all those bendy tentacles are extra costly.
