The newly revived X-Men ’97 cartoon hasn’t even hit streaming yet, and we’re already getting wave 2 of the collector-skewing Marvel Legends figures… this spring. Hasbro sent over the first images of this second series today, which includes some hints at where the plot might go, via the character bio copy.
A Look Ahead
Wave 2 includes Magneto, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, Goblin Queen, and the X-Cutioner. Some of their bios are generic, i.e. for Jean, “Endlessly empathetic, she serves as the heart of the X-Men.” Others, though, hint at what’s coming, like…
“With Professor Charles Xavier gone, Magneto — the self-proclaimed Master of Magnetism — reinvents himself as he tries to carry forward his oldest friend’s dream.”
and…
“A Jean Grey doppelgänger who shakes the X-Men to their core, Goblin Queen becomes a fierce enemy of the X-Men after her mind is corrupted by Mister Sinister.”
The others describe attributes any casual fan already knows, but those two in particular seem to indicate upcoming plots.
Bonus Features Included
Though these Marvel Legends figures do not come with build-a-figure parts, they mostly include an alternate head, extra hands, and accessories. They’ll retail at the usual $24.99 price, and come on blister cards with animation-appropriate artwork.
X-Men ’97 will continue the popular animated series from the ’90s, now produced by Marvel Studios and set to run on Disney+. Whether or not it will continue to be canon to the official multiverse remains to be seen, but Disney appears to be establishing a new Marvel animated universe that will incorporate it, at least as one possible reality. Hints of the classic theme song have already shown up in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, and Ms. Marvel.
